WASHINGTON – A Kentucky jury on Wednesday after being attacked by his neighbor in 2017. Sen. Paul (R-KY) received $375,000 in damages and $200,000 for pain and suffering, as well as $7,834 for medical expenses.
Paul was attacked by his neighbor Rene Boucher in 2017, while he was mowing his lawn. Boucher ended up with six broken ribs and three fractures. His recovery was hindered by fluid around the lungs and continued pneumonia.
Boucher ended up pleading guilty in March to a federal charge of assaulting a member of Congress and requested probation. He was sentenced to 30 days in federal prison, one year of supervised release, a $10K fine, 100 hours of community service, and ordered to have no contact with Paul’s family.
Sen. Paul previously said that Boucher should’ve received a longer sentence for the attack. Paul missed almost two weeks of time on Capitol Hill. Paul said he was getting off his riding lawnmower when Boucher hit him. Paul claims he had a flashback to the 2017 shooting at a baseball field which seriously injured Rep. Steve Scalise.
Boucher claims the attack was not motivated by politics but a lawn care dispute. Boucher also claimed Paul used his lawnmower — on the same day as the attack — and blew some leaves onto his property, igniting his outrage.
Paul on Wednesday said he hopes the jury’s verdict on Wednesday will send a “clear message that violence is not the answer.” Boucher’s lawyer said they will appeal.
