Wizards, Mystics, hold rally in Washington D.C.

Bradley Beal has been with the Washington Wizards since 2012. He has emerged as a two-time all-star and a center-piece with the Washington Wizards alongside his back-court teammate John Wall, whom is presently recovering from an injury. He currently is the number 2 scorer in the NBA. He spoke out saying that what happened to him happened simply because he was driving a fancy car (implied that it was because he was black).

Beal on Friday, in a news conference stated to the Undefeated “The officer asked me to step out of the vehicle,” “Then he comes up to me and says, ‘What if I f— up your Monday, put you in a headline and arrest you right now?'”

The New York Times, in their daily podcast, has had a series of stories from people about why they protest, and they sometimes have experiences that either happened to them personally, or, a friend, where they’ve been involved with police and something seemed a little funny to them— only in this case, it has to do with an NBA star, in Bradley Beal. The New York Times has done previous reporting about why police people sometimes stay in power long after they have an incident, detailing some of the power obstacles that reformers face when trying to advocate for change.

Nobody is saying that the police have an easy job, but, people are finding that some of the things that are meant to help ensure that police are treated fairly in a disciplinary action, have resulted in letting officers back in when they’ve done disciplinary actions in the first place which people have complained about. The New York Times also did a podcast about the the Lafayette Square incident with Trump as well, detailing some of the frustration, which seems to be echoed by Bradley Beal here. It should be noted that the ACLU of Washington D.C. did a study where the Wizards play and they found that blacks were disproportionately stopped by the officers of their Metropolitan Police Department.

Bradley Beal was joined by a Washington Mystics WNBA player, Natasha Cloud, (it should be noted that the Mystics won the title in 2019). The two teams coordinated together to make sure that the rally was possible.

“The last few weeks have been a mix of emotions ranging from sadness to that daily fear that we face with being black in America to anger,” stated Cloud, who has been a leader off the court with activism in the WNBA, “We’re using our platforms, making sure we’re using our voices. This is where we stand united togehter in solidarity, to say we’re not going to be silent anymore.”

Bradley Beal said that seeing MIchael Brown killed in his own hometown and not doing anything about it really changed him. It should be noted that that route 495 of the free way runs through DC and Prince Georgia’s County, which have had problematic allegations which raise from whether they mistreat people who are minority groups unfairly, to sexual assault.

NHL Winter Classic Could Start 2020 NHL Season

Could the 2020-21 NHL season start with a Winter Classic in January?

With the NHL’s return to play plans revealed earlier this week, the league has its next steps in resuming its season after it was put on pause in mid-March. There is still a lot of work to be done in order to get hockey back up and running later this summer, but commissioner Gary Bettman’s press conference was a good first step.

The league did not give a firm timeline for when training camps will begin and when the 24-team playoff will commence, but it is looking more and more likely that the 2020-21 season will be delayed by months in order for the league to award this season’s Stanley Cup.

That begs the question then, when will the league start up the 2020-21 season and will they play a full 82-game slate?

According to Bettman, the NHL will play all 82 games in the 2020-21 calendar, with a range of dates for starting the season anywhere between November of this year and January of next year.

That’s a wide range of dates, most likely due to the league’s flexibility on restarting the season this year. The NHL clearly does not want to start the 2020-21 season without fans in the stands, meaning the league very well could delay the upcoming season as far as possible in order to get to that point.

Starting the 2020-21 NHL season as late as January will likely have far-reaching repercussions into the 2021-22 season. Pushing the start of the 2020-21 season to January would likely cut out the All-Star Game, compact the schedule even further and likely cause the season to end in late June 2021, if not later. With Seattle set to enter play during the 2021-22 season, the league would most likely want to have as normal of a season as possible, but with the way things have gone lately, it’s hard to predict just what will happen.

There’s been talk that the NHL will go outside for their first game of the 2020-21 season, starting it off with the Winter Classic in Minnesota on the first day of the new year. It’s an intriguing idea, but one that will probably come as a last resort for the league should all other avenues fail.

The coronavirus won’t just impact the remainder of the 2019-20 season, it likely will cause ripples in the hockey world for years to come.

XFL Cancels Season Over Coronavirus Concerns

The XFL has become the latest professional sports league to cancel its regular seasons games due to the expanding Coronavirus pandemic.

XFL officials announced the move in a statement posted online Thursday night. The league, which is owned by Vince McMahon and was in its inaugural season, plans to resume play in 2021.

“Currently, the XFL will not be playing its regular-season games,” the PR states. “However, all players will be paid their base pay and benefits for the 2020 regular season. All XFL ticket holders will be issued refunds or credit toward future games. The XFL is committed to playing a full season in 2021 and future years.”

Fears of the coronavirus have caused several sports leagues to scrap games in recent days. The NBA, NHL and MLB have all suspended players indefinitely and several major events — such as WrestleMania and the Summer Olympics — are now in jeopardy.

The XFL was in its sixth week of play before being shelved on Thursday. It had been getting widespread praise from sports fans and the members of the media. According to ESPN, the league drew an average of 2 million viewers per game on ABC, ESPN and Fox.

Manny machado signs massive deal with san diego padres

SAN DIEGO – After waiting and waiting, it’s been confirmed that Manny Machado has reached a deal with the San Diego Padres. The Athletic’s Ken Rosenthal reported that Machado signed Padres to a 10 year, $300 million deal. Fernando Tatis Jr. has been a fan of Machado and shares the same agent. Now, the two dynamic players will share the left side of San Diego’s infield.

With a lineup that has Luis Urias at second base, and Eric Hosmer at first, this is now an infield that teams need to pay attention to and respect. They are becoming one of the strongest infields in the league. ESPN reports that all these players are with San Diego for the long haul, showing the San Diego is ready to turn the page on their franchise and make a serious run to reclaim their division.

Bleacher Report points out that Manny Machado’s deal provides an opt-out provision after the fifth year. Machado is a four-time All-Star and has recorded 37 home runs and 107 RBIs in 2018 with the Baltimore Orioles and the Los Angeles Dodgers. Machado’s position has not been set in stone yet but has played at third and short, when he moved to shortstop last year. The Machado blockbuster deal comes a year after signing first baseman Eric Hosmer to an at the time massive eight-year, $144 million deal. The Padres have failed to reach the postseason since 2006 and have not had a winning record since 2010.

The White Sox believed they had made the best offer for Machado. White Sox GMKenny Williams said that he was shocked to hear that Machado was off the market. This now leaves only Bryce Harper unsigned.

Philadelphia has said they are willing to spend “stupid” money on free agents, and now have their focus on Bryce Harper. Harper and his agent Scott Boras now know what the going rate is for a player like him. The signing of Machado now reveals that teams are not avoiding top free agents.

While Machado and Harper were unsigned in February, MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred acknowledged that he would prefer free agents be signed sooner than later, but that a system was put in place that allows the free agency market to operate.

Manfred also said that the market is going to empty eventually in the next few weeks, which shows Manny Machado was the one who opened the floodgates of free agency, probably leading to more free agents to get signed before the start of Spring Training games.

Patriots defeat Rams in epic snoozefest Super Bowl LIII 13-3

The New England Patriots earned their sixth Super Bowl title, defeating the LA Rams in a game that was a very slow and historic low-scoring game. It also featured a disappointing halftime show and only one touchdown. This matchup seemed like a snoozefest unless you were a Patriots fan.

The first three quarters only saw six combined points scored, the fewest in Super Bowl history. The Patriots finally reached the endzone in the fourth quarter thanks to running back Sony Michel and winning the game, beating Los Angeles 13-3.

This is the sixth title win for Tom Brady and he now has the most rings in NFL history, breaking a tie he shared with Charles Haley. Tom has said he has no plans to retire.

Tom Brady clearly struggled against a strong Rams defense

This was not one of Brady’s best Super Bowl appearances, completing only 21-of-35 passes for 262 yards, recording no touchdowns and throwing one interception. Julian Edelman became one of the key players on the Patriots offense, recording 10 catches for 141 yards, and ended up being named Super Bowl LIII MVP.

The game ended up starting slow for the Patriots vs. the Rams. Brady’s first pass ended up being picked off by the Los Angeles Rams, becoming the third quarterback in Super Bowl history to do so. Surprisingly, it did not cost the Patriots anything, as the Rams were unable to capitalize on their miscues, which included a surprising missed 46-yard field goal by Patriots’ kicker Stephen Gostkowski.

Rams and Patriots ended up making history with their low scoring

After one quarter, neither team was able to put scores on the board, making it the ninth time in Super Bowl history that no points were scored in the first quarter.

Brady and company managed to get the scoring started in the second quarter, with Gostkowski making a 42-yard field goal. This would become the only scoring done in the first half, making it the second-lowest scoring first half in history. Super Bowl IX saw the Steelers only have a 2-0 lead over the Vikings, which happened at Mercedes-Benz Stadium.

After Maroon 5 delivered their lackluster halftime performance, there was little when it came to halftime adjustments being made as both offenses continued to struggle against the strong defenses. The LA Rams eventually got themselves on the board with a 53-yard field goal. The six points are the record for fewest points after three quarters.

Michel ended up scoring the first touchdown of the game, giving the Pats a 10-3 lead, with seven minutes remaining in the game. He and Jamal Lewis are the only rookies in the past 30 years to record a rushing touchdown in the Super Bowl.

Michel also recorded his sixth postseason touchdown, the most since Terrell Davis scored eight in 1997.
